APPRENCICESHIPS AND RESIDENCIES

2002-2006 Apprentice to Terry Gess, Michael Kline and Cynthia Bringle

PRIMARY WORK EXPERIENCE

2006— Studio Potter

Courtney Martin makes functional stoneware that is both wheel thrown and hand built. The extensive patterning that characterize the work is created using a latex or wax resist and is inspired by abstract shapes and patterns of African mud cloth and the geometric forms of architectural ironwork.

The pieces are fired in a wood-burning cross-draft climbing kiln. While Courtney Martin uses color, much of her work explores the patterning possibilities of only black and white glazes.
