Frank Hamilton was a ceramist before becoming primarily an abstract expressionist painter in the 1960s. There is virtually no documentation of his early career as a ceramist.

He painted flat, two-dimensional canvases with bright acrylic paints. His paintings are often compared to Miro and Kandinsky.
