Crista Ann Ames is known for creating figurative sculpture. Works appear as the human figure, the animal figure, or occasionally the hybrid figure. Ames' sculptures are created using stoneware and feature a muted matte glaze palette. Ames work is frequently multimedia incorporating other materials such as wood, textiles, and metal.

Ames' work explores the animal instinct and how it is used by humanity's in establishing and maintaining personal relationships. Ames draws on mythology, iconography and personal narrative. Pastoral life, animal husbandry, women's craft and fertility are common themes in her work.
