Jess Palmer is known for wheel-thrown and, on occasion altered, functional porcelain work. Surfaces are finished using a monochromatic ground accented with bright colors or gold luster and techniques including incising, mishima, stamping, sprigging, and slip-trailing.

Surface patterns are occasionally made with computer generated die-cut templates and masks. A background in graphic design is evident in the extensive use of pattern, geometric and motif repetition.
