Herbert Sanders is best known for the crystalline glazes and lusters he used on his ceramic vessels. 

The crystalline glazes he used are the result of his research and insistence on perfection. His pieces are characterized by the controlled placement of crystals on the surface.

Sanders was the first American to earn a Ph.D. in ceramics.
